NOTAPE™ Debuts Tape-Free Zipper Technology in China, Marking a Major Structural Shift After 130 Years

On March 11, at the 2026 InterTextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics (Spring Edition) , Hong Kong–based innovation technology brand NOTAPE™ officially debuted its pioneered tape-free, seamless zipper in mainland China.

The innovation breaks the 130-year-old structural formula of “zipper = tape + teeth.” Guided by a philosophy of innovation through subtraction, NOTAPE™ offers the apparel industry a new structural solution that enhances lightweight construction, design flexibility, and sustainability.

From Traditional Construction to Structural Reinvention

Within the zipper industry’s more than 130-year history, conventional zippers have consisted of three core components: teeth, tape, and slider. The fabric tape has traditionally served as the critical interface connecting zipper teeth to garment fabrics, typically secured through stitching.

For over a century, this structure remained largely unchanged.

However, as the fashion industry increasingly moves toward lightweight construction, structural optimization, and sustainable manufacturing, traditional zipper architecture has begun to face renewed scrutiny.

NOTAPE™’s concept of “Zipper Reinvented” proposes a radical shift: by completely removing the fabric tape, zipper teeth can be directly integrated with the garment fabric. This fundamentally simplifies the structure and represents a significant rethinking of conventional zipper design logic.

The breakthrough did not happen overnight. Drawing on more than three decades of zipper R&D expertise, the NOTAPE™ team spent eight years and conducted thousands of experimental iterations to realize a tape-free, seamless zipper structure.

The technology has already secured multiple international patents and has received global recognition, including the Red Dot Design Award: Best of the Best and the ISPO Award for Best Product.

Opening New Possibilities for Design and Manufacturing

Compared with traditional tape-based zippers, NOTAPE™’s structural innovation introduces changes across both design expression and production processes.

In terms of appearance and wearability, conventional zippers often create visible ridges and seam lines when applied to lightweight fabrics, affecting the natural drape and smoothness of garments. By removing the tape, NOTAPE™ allows the zipper to integrate directly with the fabric, preserving the material’s original drape while delivering a lighter, smoother, and more skin-friendly wearing experience.

From a design perspective, the innovation also frees designers from many long-standing technical constraints. Without fabric tape or stitching requirements, designers no longer need to deal with color matching issues, folded seams, or complex sampling processes. It also eliminates the “bulging” or puckering often associated with traditional zipper installations, enabling cleaner and more refined visual expression.

One designer attending the exhibition shared his experience:

“When developing garments using special fabrics in the past, we often had to run three or four rounds of sampling just to match the zipper tape color with the fabric dye. Since there is no tape anymore, that problem disappears. At the same time, without stitching constraints, pattern development becomes much more efficient.”

A Sustainability Breakthrough With Measurable Impact

At a time when sustainability has become a central challenge for the fashion industry, NOTAPE™ addresses the issue through fundamental structural innovation.

By removing the fabric tape from the outset, the technology effectively reconfigures the starting point of the zipper supply chain. In terms of material weight, water consumption, energy usage, and chemical inputs, the new structure can reduce resource consumption by up to 95 percent compared with conventional tape-based zippers.

This means every NOTAPE™ zipper requires fewer resources and generates fewer emissions throughout its production process.

According to TÜV certification, the carbon footprint of NOTAPE™ zippers is 19.4–26.6% lower than that of traditional tape-based zippers. Rather than being a symbolic sustainability claim, this represents quantifiable environmental performance data across the product lifecycle.

At the same time, NOTAPE™ maintains high standards of core performance. In key indicators such as pull strength and durability, the products meet or exceed international testing standards.

The company has also introduced an innovative “single-tooth repair” service. If a zipper tooth becomes damaged, the entire zipper does not need to be replaced; only the individual tooth is repaired. This significantly extends the product’s lifecycle and reduces the likelihood of garment disposal, aligning with the principles of circular fashion: lower consumption and longer use.

Focused on High-End Apparel Applications

NOTAPE™ technology is currently applied under two brands: NOTAPE (NT label) for the luxury segment and KEE for the high-end market. This dual-brand strategy allows the technology to address a broader range of apparel applications, including down jackets, technical outerwear, lightweight windbreakers, urban casualwear, and business apparel. Functional options such as structural water repellence are also available to meet the needs of both professional outdoor and urban functional garments.

Dual-Brand Strategy Serving Different Market Segments

NOTAPE™ technology is currently licensed globally to two zipper brands: NOTAPE (NT label) and KEE for production.

The NT label is positioned for the top-tier luxury apparel market, with a focus on exceptional design and craftsmanship. KEE, meanwhile, serves the mid-to-high-end apparel segment, offering structural solutions that balance innovation with cost efficiency.

This dual-brand strategy allows NOTAPE™ technology to address a broader range of market needs.

A Conversation About the Future of the Zipper

During the debut exhibition, the NOTAPE™ booth attracted significant attention through side-by-side demonstrations and interactive displays. Numerous media representatives, designers, and senior buyers stopped to explore the innovation.

At the Media Open Day event, NOTAPE™ invited representatives from WWD International Fashion News, 21st Century Business Herald, and Tigerhood, among other media outlets, to engage in discussions.

Brand representatives, industry buyers, and experienced designers shared their perspectives on the technology’s potential impact from angles including technical innovation, industrial application, and design development.

One senior buyer commented:

“What NOTAPE™ brings is not simply a new zipper product, but a new structural solution. In the past, most innovation in fashion focused on fabrics and silhouettes. NOTAPE™ introduces innovation at the structural level of garments. This shift could influence multiple stages of the industry, from design to manufacturing to repair, making it a valuable new direction for the supply chain.”

Reimagine the Future of Garment Structure

In today’s highly mature apparel industry, even a seemingly small structural change can reshape how the entire supply chain thinks about product design and manufacturing.

For NOTAPE™, the concept of “tape-free” represents more than a technological breakthrough—it reflects a shift in design philosophy. By applying subtractive thinking to garment structure, the company seeks to rebalance functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.

In this sense, what NOTAPE™ is exploring goes beyond a single product innovation in zippers. It represents a new imagination for the future structure of garments.
