130 Years Later, Cars Were Reinvented by Electrification. What About the Zipper?

NOTAPE™ and the Power of Subtraction

There is a remarkable coincidence in the history of technology: 130 years.

In 1886, Carl Benz patented his gasoline-powered automobile, marking a key milestone in the birth of the modern car. Around 130 years later, Tesla helped move electric vehicles from the margins of the automotive industry to the center of global competition.

A similar transformation is now emerging in something far smaller: the zipper.

In 1893, Whitcomb Judson patented an early predecessor of the modern zipper. For more than a century, one fundamental construction remained largely unchanged: zipper teeth attached to fabric tape, with the tape sewn onto the garment.

In 2025, Hong Kong-founded technology brand NOTAPE™ asked a simple question:

Why does a zipper have to have tape?

NOTAPE™ challenges the conventional formula of “zipper = tape + teeth” by eliminating the independent tape and traditional sewing construction, allowing the zipper teeth to integrate directly with the garment fabric.

This is the essence of subtraction-driven innovation: rather than continuously improving an old solution, ask what no longer needs to exist.

From No Tape to No Coating

NOTAPE™ SEAL takes this philosophy further.

Presented at PERFORMANCE DAYS on October 13–14, SEAL introduces a “Three-No” design: No Tape. No Seam. No Coating.

Instead of relying on conventional water-resistant coatings, NOTAPE™ SEAL is engineered to create water-resistant performance through its physical structure.

The principle is simple:

Keep the function. Remove the unnecessary layers.

This approach also creates new possibilities for lightweight and technical apparel. By removing tape and traditional sewing, NOTAPE™ enables a lighter, flatter and more integrated zipper construction, helping preserve the fabric’s natural drape and movement while reducing visual and structural interference.

From Product Subtraction to Supply-Chain Impact

The impact of subtraction extends beyond the product itself.

Conventional zipper tape involves multiple processes, including yarn production, weaving, dyeing, finishing and sewing. By eliminating the tape at the source, NOTAPE™ can reduce associated materials and manufacturing processes.

According to TÜV-certified data, compared with conventional tape-based zipper constructions, NOTAPE™ can achieve reductions of up to 95% across selected metrics including weight, water consumption, energy consumption and chemical use, while reducing carbon footprint by approximately 19.4%–26.6%.

A change to a single zipper may appear small. At apparel-manufacturing scale, however, structural innovation can create a much larger impact.

From Zipper to Technology Brand

NOTAPE™ is not simply building a new type of zipper. It is building recognition around NOTAPE™ technology.

The ambition is similar to what has made GORE-TEX a technology brand rather than simply a material supplier: technology becomes recognizable, trusted and valuable enough to influence product choice.

For NOTAPE™, this means moving beyond conventional component-industry competition based primarily on specifications, length and cost, toward technology solutions, authorized applications, manufacturer training, production services and joint development with apparel brands.

When a technology becomes embedded in the garment-making process—and becomes part of a product’s differentiation—the zipper is no longer merely a hidden component.

It can become a reason to choose the product.

Reinventing What We No Longer Question

Innovation does not always mean creating something completely new.

Sometimes, it means questioning something that has existed for so long that nobody asks why it exists.

From removing the tape, to removing traditional sewing, to removing conventional water-resistant films or coatings, NOTAPE™ is exploring a different path:

What if innovation begins with subtraction?

Because reinventing a mature product does not always require adding more.

Sometimes, the hardest innovation is knowing what to remove.
