Rethinking the Zipper Structure Behind Modern Apparel Design
For more than 130 years, the zipper has followed a familiar manufacturing concept: zipper teeth are attached to textile tape, and the tape is sewn onto the garment panel. This structure has supported the development of apparel for generations, but it has also created certain limitations in modern garment design.
As performance apparel moves toward lighter construction, cleaner aesthetics, and more integrated components, designers are increasingly looking beyond traditional zipper structures.
At NOTAPE™, we take a structural approach to Innovative Zipper Technology.
Can zippers create a reliable closure without relying on traditional tape constructions?
Our revolutionary approach to zipper solutions has led us to develop a simpler structure that challenging the status quo in the zipper industry and pushing the boundaries of apparel design.
What Is Innovative Zipper Technology?
Improving zipper parts is not the only way to innovate zipper technology. We should consider the relation of zippers to fabric and how they are arranged on a garment, as well as how they are managed in a production process.
A zipper system usually includes:
| Traditional Structures | Limitations |
| Teeth connected to textile tape | Extra material layers |
| Tape sewn onto garment panels | Extra sewing operations |
| Tape edges are visible | Influences minimalist design |
| Different material combinations | Variability in production |
No Tape focuses on removing those structural elements of a zipper.
The No Tape structure eliminates textile tape by embedding zipper teeth directly into the fabric panel.
This invention provides a closure system that integrates design more fully.
The No Tape Structure allows apparel to have a more design-integrated appearance because:
How No Tape Structure Creates Cleaner Apparel Aesthetics
Recent trends in apparel design have focused on visual consistency.
Outdoor jackets, cycling apparel, sportswear, etc., have to strike a balance between:
•Functional performance
•Lightweight construction
•Minimal visual interruption
•Premium product appearance
Traditional zipper tape can result in a visible boundary between the zipper and fabric. No Tape zipper solutions provide designers the opportunity to achieve smooth surfaces on garments.
Design Comparison
| Design Element | Traditional Zipper | No Tape Zipper Solution |
| Connection method | Tape attached and sewn | Direct fabric integration |
| Visual appearance | Separate zipper area | Cleaner closure line |
| Design language | Conventional layered structure | Minimal and modern style |
| Material usage | Additional tape component | Simplified structure |
For brands focused on performance apparel, this structural difference offers another way to achieve a more modern product aesthetic.

NOTAPE™ Approach: Challenging a Long-Standing Zipper Assumption
At NOTAPE™, our development started with questioning a long-standing assumption:
A zipper must have tape.
After many years of research, testing, and optimizing structures, NOTAPE™ launched a new approach to zippers with No Tape and No Seam technologies.
Our innovations include:
The World’s First No Tape Coil Zipper
The World’s First No Tape, No Seam Resin Zipper
This approach aims to reduce layers in a zipper structure rather than increasing them.
The basic elements remain:
•Teeth
•Slider
•Puller
•Pin & box
•Stoppers
With less reliance on traditional tape structures, Innovative Zipper Technology provides new opportunities for apparel designers and engineers.
Structural Innovation Beyond Appearance
A zipper is a continuation of other aspects of design such as manufacturing, material management, and construction of a garment.
Traditional zipper production involves many steps such as:
•Working with different color and specification tapes
•Checking if zipper tapes are compatible with fabrics
•Performing separate tape sewing operations
•Managing additional production tasks
No Tape zipper solutions provide a way to simplify the above mentioned considerations.
Production Impact
| Production Factor | Traditional Zipper Process | No Tape Structure |
| Tape inventory management | Required | Reduced dependency |
| Tape color matching | Required | Simplified |
| Additional sewing process | Required | No secondary tape sewing |
| Material handling | More components | Streamlined structure |
This allows apparel manufacturers to devise new, more efficient ways to produce zipper systems while ensuring systems maintain the required functionality.
Innovative Zipper Technology Supporting Sustainable Apparel Development
Structural innovation can also influence environmental performance.
NOTAPE™ tape-free eco zipper has achieved TÜV-certified improvements in several areas:
| Environmental Indicator | Coil Zipper Reduction | Resin Zipper Reduction |
| Carbon impact | 19.4–26.6% lower overall | 19.4–26.6% lower overall |
| Water consumption | 45% reduction | 95% reduction |
| Energy consumption | 42% reduction | 32% reduction |
| Chemical usage | 45% reduction | 62% reduction |
The simplified structure also contributes to material reduction.
For example, based on a #5 plastic zipper conversion standard:
•Traditional resin zipper: 12–15g
•No Tape zipper: 6.66g
•Traditional coil zipper: 11–14g
•No Tape Coil Zipper: 6.5g
NOTAPE™ estimates that the structure can save 1,617kg CO₂ per 10,000 units under specific calculation conditions.
Based on #5 plastic zipper conversion standards, with each fir tree absorbing 18kg of CO₂ annually.
The Future of Innovative Zipper Technology
Innovative Zipper Technology is one example of a growing tendency in the apparel industry to improve products by reexamining core elements.
Brands using No Tape zipper technology can create:
•Sleeker garment designs
•More efficient zipper placement
•Lighter weight garments
•More sustainable design
With No Tape, the goal is to create a zipper technology that will also encourage designers to think about how small parts can modify the apparel system as a whole.
By using principles of structural engineering by combining them with the science of garment design, NOTAPE™ is committed to providing advanced zipper solutions for the outdoor, sporting, and performance apparel markets.
FAQs
Q1: How are the zipper top stop and bottom stop handled?
The zipper structure is formed using patented equipment and specialized process treatments.
Q2: How does the physical performance of NOTAPE™ zippers compare? Do they meet industry usage standards? Do they meet the standards used for traditional zippers?
NOTAPE™ is a global first and currently has no independent standard. At present, testing is conducted with reference to the execution standards of traditional zippers. All physical performance test data meets or exceeds existing industry standards (EU, US, and international standards).
Q3: Can NOTAPE™ coil zippers be repaired?
No. Coil zippers cannot be repaired. However, the damage rate for coil zippers is extremely low.
Q4: How is the pricing of NOTAPE™ zippers?
NOTAPE™ is positioned as a premium solution. Higher cost reflects the innovation and technology involved.
Q5: If a NOTAPE™ zipper is damaged, can it be replaced or repaired? How is it repaired? Will it affect the garment?
Individual zipper teeth on plastic zippers can be repaired without affecting the garment.
