A zipper without textile tape.

A water-resistant closure without a conventional tape-sewing line.

A protective structure without surface coating.

From 25–27 August 2026, NOTAPE™ will present the NOTAPE™ SEAL Water-resistant Zipper to the Chinese market for the first time at Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Autumn Edition 2026 in Shanghai.

As one stop on the NOTAPE™ global exhibition tour, the event gives apparel brands, designers, material developers and garment manufacturers an opportunity to examine a different approach to water-resistant closure design.

The focus is not simply a new zipper product, but a structural question:

Can a water-resistant zipper be designed without conventional zipper tape, without the seam used to sew that tape to the garment, and without relying on a surface coating?

NOTAPE™ SEAL was developed around that question.

Rethinking the Conventional Water-resistant Zipper

A conventional water-resistant zipper generally combines:

Zipper Teeth + Textile Tape + Coating or Film + Sewing Line + Garment Fabric

This structure works, but it also introduces additional materials and processing steps:

•Textile tape can absorb moisture.

•Sewing creates needle holes along the zipper connection.

•Coatings add another functional layer.

•Tape and seam allowances increase local thickness.

•Repeated washing, folding and abrasion can affect coated surfaces.

•Tape requires colour matching, stocking and additional processing.

Instead of improving these layers individually, NOTAPE™ takes a different approach:

Remove the layers that are no longer structurally necessary.

No Tape: Direct Integration with Garment Fabric

The most fundamental change is the removal of conventional textile zipper tape.

Rather than fixing zipper teeth onto a separate textile carrier and then sewing that carrier to the garment, NOTAPE™ enables the zipper structure to be integrated directly with a compatible fabric panel.

The construction changes from:

Teeth → Tape → Seam → Garment

to:

Teeth → Garment Fabric

Removing the intermediate tape can help reduce:

•Absorbent material around the closure

•Layer accumulation and bulk

•Zipper-related material consumption

•Tape colour-matching requirements

•Separate zipper-tape inventory

The zipper can also follow the garment surface more closely, supporting a cleaner and more integrated appearance.

No Seam: Removing the Tape-Sewing Line

“No Seam” specifically refers to the removal of the traditional sewing line used to attach zipper tape to garment fabric. It does not mean the complete garment contains no seams.

In conventional installation, sewing needles penetrate the zipper tape and garment panel. For water-resistant garments, these needle holes become another variable that must be managed.

By eliminating the conventional zipper-tape sewing process, NOTAPE™ SEAL can provide:

•No tape-sewing needle holes along the connection

•No separate zipper-tape sewing pass

•Fewer overlapping construction layers

•A cleaner transition between zipper and fabric

This is especially relevant for lightweight shells, sportswear and garments where reduced bulk and visual continuity are important.

No Coating: Water Resistance Through Structure

Many conventional water-resistant zippers use a coating or laminated film on the zipper tape.

NOTAPE™ SEAL approaches water resistance differently.

Its Structural Engineered Anti-Leak Technology — SEAL incorporates a physical partition into the zipper structure while integrating the teeth directly with the garment fabric.

There is therefore no external coating performing the primary water-resistant function.

Instead, water resistance is addressed through:

Structural Geometry + Physical Partition + Direct Fabric Integration

This shifts the design strategy away from surface treatment and toward structural engineering.

How the SEAL Structure Changes the Closure

NOTAPE™ retains the essential functional components of a zipper, including the teeth, slider, puller, pin and box, and stopping structures.

The key change is the connection between the teeth and garment fabric.

Conventional construction:

Teeth → Textile Tape → Coating → Sewing → Garment

NOTAPE™ SEAL construction:

Teeth → Engineered Structural Connection → Garment fabric

This removes three variables commonly found in traditional water-resistant zipper systems:

  1. Moisture absorption through textile zipper tape
  2. Needle holes created by zipper-tape sewing
  3. Dependence on a surface coating

The self-supporting teeth structure is also designed to balance thinness, closure stability and mechanical strength.

Fabric thickness, elasticity, surface construction and end-use requirements still need to be evaluated for each garment programme.

One Structural Concept, Multiple Design Benefits

Design PrincipleStructural ChangePractical Effect
No TapeTextile zipper tape removedFewer layers and less absorbent material
No SeamTape-sewing line removedNo sewing holes along tape attachment
No CoatingNo coating used as primary water barrierLess dependence on coating condition
Direct IntegrationTeeth connect directly with fabricCleaner zipper-to-garment transition

Together, these changes can create a closure that is thinner, lighter and more integrated with the garment structure.

Depending on the configuration, NOTAPE™ SEAL can support:

•More than 30% weight reduction

•Reduced bulk around the zipper line

•Cleaner visual continuity

•Less zipper-tape material

•Reduced colour-matching requirements

•Elimination of a separate tape-sewing operation

Potential applications include outdoor apparel, hardshell jackets, ski wear, cycling apparel, sportswear, sun-protective clothing and lightweight functional garments.

Reducing Environmental Impact Through Structural Simplification

The same design philosophy also reduces material and processing requirements.

NOTAPE™ Eco Zipper assessments indicate:

•Water consumption reduction: Coil 45% / Plastic 95%

•Energy consumption reduction: Coil 42% / Plastic 32%

•Chemical usage reduction: Coil 45% / Plastic 62%

TÜV-certified carbon-footprint assessments show approximately 19.4%–26.6% lower carbon emissions compared with corresponding conventional zipper structures.

Under specified conversion conditions, 10,000 units can represent approximately 1,617 kg of CO₂ savings.*

*Based on #5 Resin Zipper conversion standards, with each fir tree assumed to absorb 18 kg of CO₂ annually.

For NOTAPE™, sustainability begins with a straightforward principle:

Before improving an additional layer, consider whether that layer is needed at all.

China Debut: A Different Way to Design Water-resistant Closures

Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics provides a relevant meeting point for apparel, textile, accessory and material professionals, but the purpose of the NOTAPE™ China debut goes beyond introducing another zipper.

It presents a different design logic.

Instead of asking how to improve the coating on traditional zipper tape, NOTAPE™ asks:

•Does the zipper need textile tape?

•Does that tape need a sewing line?

•Does water resistance need to depend on a surface coating?

The NOTAPE™ SEAL Water-resistant Zipper — No Tape, No Seam, No Coating provides one structural answer.

Fewer layers. Less bulk. No conventional tape-sewing line. No coating-dependent water-resistant structure.
