The R&D Journey Behind the Tape-Free Zipper

NOTAPE™:

The development of our tape-free, seamless zipper technology began eight years ago, but its foundation is built on more than three decades of specialization in the zipper industry since 1989. Over the years, we have established a relatively comprehensive technical system across materials, molds, and production processes, which provided the groundwork for this later structural innovation.

During the R&D process, we faced three major challenges.

First, the attaching method between the zipper teeth and the fabric.

Traditional zippers rely on tape as an intermediate layer. Once that tape is removed, the primary challenge becomes how to achieve a systematically validated direct integration between the zipper teeth and the fabric itself. To solve this, we tested dozens of process routes across different zipper tooth materials, including plastic and coil, as well as a wide range of fabric characteristics. Ultimately, we developed a parameter-based direct bonding process that ensures fastening strength meets and in some cases exceeds the standard of conventional sewn zippers.

Second, material compatibility and process adaptation.

The market includes a wide variety of fabrics, and polyester, nylon, and blended textiles all respond differently to bonding processes. We therefore built a fabric database and carried out systematic testing on mainstream fabric types, documenting the optimal process parameters for each. This allows us to provide brand customers with clear and practical application guidance.

Third, mass-production stability and consistency.

A successful laboratory sample does not automatically translate into reliable large-scale manufacturing. To address this, we independently designed and developed dedicated production equipment, enabling precise control over key stages of the process and ensuring that mass-produced products maintain the same standard as development samples. This took years of repeated adjustment and refinement before reaching stability.

Over the course of eight years of development, we had to start over many times. But each setback deepened our understanding of a structural logic that had remained unchanged for more than 130 years. Breakthroughs in technology are never achieved overnight; they are built through the accumulation of countless rounds of trial and error.
